Not being a member of the Church of England, I tend to view the Archbishop as one of those quaint hangovers from a bygone age; a little like Morris dancers or Real Tennis.
You know, something that gives a flavour to us as a nation and that somehow we might miss - but is not really very relevant anymore.
Several of my friends disagree, and tell me that the Archbishop is actually a very deep thinker; a really clever guy, with much to contribute to Christianity in particular and the country is general.
And they also point out, quite correctly, that he has the best platform of all the Christian leaders in the UK and one of the most prominent in the world - what he says at least gets reported!
Two thoughts...
One.
Can he truly be surprised by all the fuss that his comments have created? - Whether of not he actually said precisely what the press are claiming. (Supplementary question - is he so naive as to think that the press would actually care exactly what he said and be bothered about reporting it accurately???)
Secondly.
When is he going to stir up controversy by using his public position to proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God, Saviour and the only way to God? I do not know whether he has a job description; but if he does, you would hope that might be in it.
I wonder how the press would report that...
